
This is an elective and advanced course in orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD). This course offers an advanced exploration of how structure and function relate to the development and remediation of breathing, swallowing, chewing, feeding, voice, language, and articulation disorders.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course students will:
1) Define the scope of practice of orofacial myofunctional disorder for SLPs across the lifespan and patient populations.
2) Explain how areas of oral dysfunction contribute to communication disorders, swallowing disorders, and other medical and dental conditions.
3) Differentially diagnose OMD from oral stage dysphagia.
4) Differentiate between Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) goals, objectives, and strategies.
5) Apply oromyofunctional considerations and techniques to case study scenarios.
